But <a title=\"Anna Politkovskaya (Wikipedia)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Politkovskaya\">the more I read about her<\/a>, the more grief I felt.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/NR\/exeres\/FB4A832C-35B7-42F5-A0D8-E931D54D33A8.htm\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"377\" height=\"251\" alt=\"Anna Politkovskaya\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/6\/64\/Anna_Politkovskaya.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I spoke with a veteran American journalist friend of mine in Cairo, who covered the war in Chechnya and was based in Moscow in the 1990s. He knew <a title=\"CPJ condemns slaying of Russian reporter Ann Politkovskaya\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cpj.org\/news\/2006\/europe\/russia07oct06na.html\">Anna<\/a>, and described her as &#8220;very, very brave,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Her coverage during the war was great, but more importantly her post-war coverage. She did many stories on the mass killings by Russians and their proxies, on atrocities against Chechnyan detainees&#8230; That made many in Moscow upset.
