{"id":2331,"date":"2007-09-25T03:08:01","date_gmt":"2007-09-25T03:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amrani.cc\/wp\/?p=2331"},"modified":"2007-09-25T03:08:01","modified_gmt":"2007-09-25T03:08:01","slug":"2007-9-25-egypts-attack-on-the-press-continues-html","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/amrani.cc\/wp\/?p=2331","title":{"rendered":"Egypt&#8217;s attack on the press continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-src=\"v5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/afp\/20070924\/wl_africa_afp\/egyptpoliticsmediatrial_070924164040\">Egypt jails three journalists<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>CAIRO (AFP) &#8211; A court on Monday sentenced the editor of an opposition newspaper and two other journalists to two years in jail for &#8220;damaging the image of justice&#8221;, in the latest case against Egypt&#8217;s media.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Wafd&#8217;s editor Anwar al-Hawari, Mahmud Ghallab and Amir Othman were jailed for &#8220;having published untrue information which damaged the reputation of the justice system and the justice ministry&#8221;, the court ruled.<\/p>\n<p>The three, who did not attend the hearing and remain free on bail pending an appeal, were also ordered to pay small fines, a judicial source said.<\/p>\n<p>The judge accepted the case filed by several Egyptian lawyers after Al-Wafd had in January quoted Justice Minister Mamduh Mari as saying that 90 percent of Egyptian judges were not up to the job.<\/p>\n<p>Mari said he had been misquoted and the lawyers then claimed the reports had indirectly damaged their image.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are not at war, we didn&#8217;t reveal military secrets.
