{"id":853,"date":"2003-11-08T22:44:22","date_gmt":"2003-11-08T22:44:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amrani.cc\/wp\/?p=853"},"modified":"2003-11-08T22:44:22","modified_gmt":"2003-11-08T22:44:22","slug":"2003-11-8-likudniks-target-campuses-html","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/amrani.cc\/wp\/?p=853","title":{"rendered":"Likudniks target campuses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-src=\"v5\">Salon.com is running an <a href=\"http:\/\/salon.com\/news\/feature\/2003\/11\/06\/middle_east\/\">interesting article<\/a> on how Likudnik activists are targeting Middle Eastern Studies departments that receive federal aid to impose their own views, and ultimately, academics who share their extremist views.<\/p>\n<p>The article shows that the usual anti-Arab suspects &#8212; Martin Kramer, Daniel Pipes, David Horowitz, Stanley Kurtz &#8212; are supporting or leading advocates of this campaign. Their main boogeyman &#8212; when it isn&#8217;t simply academics who are foreign or have Middle Eastern roots &#8212; is as always Edward Said, who they claim is representative of the field as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>While there is no denying that Said was an influential figure, anyone studying Middle Eastern Studies today will focus more on criticizing Said (from a post-modern or traditionalist perspective) than actually endorsing him. And it is never mentioned anywhere that Said was a professor of English literature, and that Orientalism was in great part devoted to literature rather than political studies.
