AP journalist Nadia Abou El-Magd reports:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt extends jail time for pro-reform protesters, including one who was sexually abused and severely tortured<\/strong><br \/>CAIRO, Egypt (AP) _ Prosecutors on Wednesday extended the detentions of 50 members of the banned <a title=\"Akef calls for the release of detainees\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ikhwanweb.com\/Home.asp?zPage=Systems&amp;System=PressR&amp;Press=Show&amp;Lang=E&amp;ID=4578\">Muslim Brotherhood<\/a> and two other activists who were among hundreds arrested for taking part in pro-reform protests earlier in April and May.<br \/>The public prosecutors office also ordered medical treatment for one of the activists, Mohammed el-Sharkawi, who said he was <a title=\"HRW calls for an investigation\" href=\"\/archives\/2006\/05\/30\/hrw-calls-for-investigating-assaults-on-pro-democracy-detainees\/\">tortured and sodomized<\/a> at a <a title=\"Qasr el-Nil Police Station\" href=\"\/archives\/2006\/06\/01\/police-crackdown-on-anti-torture-demo\/\">Cairo police station<\/a> after his arrest on May 25.<br \/>El-Sharkawi, 24, was grabbed, punched and kicked by more than 15 men in plainclothes after he had participated in a peaceful protest outside of the Journalists&#8217; Syndicate in downtown Cairo. Another activist Karim el-Sha&#8217;er arrested with him was also beaten.<br \/>The 50 members of the Brotherhood, have been in jail since protests on May 11. Since April, police have arrested hundreds of activists involved in peaceful protests of disciplinary hearings for <a title=\"Baheyya on the judges\" href=\"http:\/\/baheyya.blogspot.com\/2006\/05\/are-judges-heroes.html\">two reformist judges<\/a>.<br \/>Authorities can hold detainees for up to six months without trial under Egyptian law.<br \/>On Tuesday 164 Brotherhood protesters and 21 non-Brotherhood secular activists ordered <a title=\"Arabist report on the renewal of detention\" href=\"\/archives\/2006\/06\/06\/four-detainees-released-21-others-given-15-more-days\/\">held for another 15 days<\/a> have already been in detention since April.
