Slideshow: Portraits from Al-Azhar

Check out those pix by Nasser Nouri of a Quranic children summer school at Al-Azhar mosque. You can find the slideshow here.

  1. Great pics. Slightly disturbing to see such little girls wearing hegab though that does seem to be a trend (I once saw a little two or three year old toddling along holding her father’s hand, swaddled in a hegab – what kind of nutcase thinks such little kids have “charms” to hide?) Or is wearing the scarf something a girl child does for the duration of the Quranic lesson only?

  2. I notice there is at least one girl in the pix who was not veiled.
I think those little girls are veiled for the two reasons you mentioned.. I’m sure some of them are not veiled, but their parents thought they had to dress them up traditionally as a sign of respect for the mosque. I’m sure also there would be those veiled by their parents out of religious conservatism.
