Photographer caught doctoring Lebanon pics

The really stupid thing about the freelance photographer for Reuters who doctored his pictures is that his stupidity will discredit the thousands of real pictures out there that show what an ugly war this has been. And while the pro-Israel blogosphere probably rejoices, it doesn’t change that between 600 and 900 Lebanese people, for the most part civilians, have been killed.

And besides I don’t even see what he was trying to do.

I was interviewed by the German newspaper Stuttgart Zeitung (sp?) today about the Flickr pictures. Clearly a lot of people have picked up on the media side of this war and what a powerful (but ultimately still too weak) impact some of the horrible images we’ve seen have had.

  1. They all are doctored. Evidence is comming out on staged photo op shoots of fake funnerals in Lebanon. One has the dead corps, falling and gettin up by himself and coverd again by the spectators. Most of the anti Israel photos and staged funerals are finally getting press.

  2. Only 900 Lebanese vermin killed? It’s about time the Israelis take their gloves off. The vermin certainly don’t warn Israelis with leaflets before they fire missles into Israeli cities. The vermin don’t use precision-guided weapons to target military/terrorist targets. No, they hide behind women and children … they are a bunch of cowardly bastards….

  3. Aharad sounds awfully like those who claim the holocaust was a fabrication. People are suffering in large numbers, and many are witnessing their suffering. If you want to deny that you may as well go and join a nazi retirement home in Argentina. Or perhaps that is in fact where you’re writing from?

  4. The added smoke is only part of it. On another photo, Reuters says Hajj added 2 missles that were not there. In addition, he file the photos direct, rather than going through the local editor so there was no double-check before the photos went in.

About as much as one would expect from someone who is obviously ignorant.

LEBANESE Joe, go on say it with me, LEBANESE means everyone in Lebanon, from Shiia to Sunni (and other denominations) Muslims; from Maronite to Catholic Christians; From the Druze and even Jewish Lebanese.

The LEBANESE PEOPLE are not fighting Israel, Hezbollah are fighting Israel.

There is a number of Lebanese, whether one agrees with them or not, who have condemned Hezbollah’s actions in different degrees.

That said, Israel has bombed people who’ve attempted to leave villages when the leaflets were dropped. Israel has attack UN forces. Israel has attack Lebanese Army bases. With its, apparently, precision-guided weapons Israel has managed to kill over 40 civilians in Qana… mostly women and children.

I just hope that the Israeli “dogs” get their legs bitten by those Lebanese “vermin” of which you speak and go running back with their tails between their legs.

You have a good day now.

  6. The newspaper’s called “Stuttgarter Zeitung”, but the interview isn’t online yet. I’ll have a look at it once it’s out (provided it’s online) and tell you my impression.

  7. praktike,
I looked at the photos, albeit rather small versions, and it is a lot more smoke — rather clumsily added with the ‘stamp tool’, actually, I can see why he was caught. But that’s just it, by doctoring any photo, you call into question all photos — so that people like AHarad above can start saying that no one was actually killed and funerals were faked. We rely on these photos for reality and once we start monkeying with them…

It is a bit of a fine line, because I’ve watched photo editors in action, they play with brightness and contrast, lighten up faces for more effect, highlight certain parts of a picture to make it more dramatic, slightly darken the edges of the sky to frame the subject… it all skates on the edge. But adding smoke and flares — that’s pretty clearly well beyond the line.

  8. Is there someplace one can see the before and after doctored pictures online? Or see all the pictures that were doctored?

  9. As a Marine, I remember Oct. 23, 1983. As I last recalll over 160 Marines were killed during the barracks bombing in Beirut. The body count (for lack of a better term) that I am now reading after the past 23 years (has it been that long?) is over 200. Is it me or the media? Did my mind stop after the 160th? I can’t really say, all I know is that I would die for a chance to kill one little terrorist bastard. Kill them all and let God sort them out.
