Omar Sharif, bully

Omar Sharif, the man who famously bullied Edward Said when they were at school together, has done it again:

Omar.H1BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Omar Sharif pleaded no contest Tuesday to misdemeanor battery and was ordered to take an anger management course for punching a parking valet who refused to accept his European currency.

The Egyptian-born actor, known for his roles in “Doctor Zhivago” and “Lawrence of Arabia,” wasn’t required to be in court and the plea was entered on his behalf by attorney Harland Braun. Sharif, 74, was in Egypt on Tuesday.

. . .

According to the lawsuit, Sharif was belligerent and intoxicated and called Anderson, a Guatemalan immigrant, a “stupid Mexican” when he refused to accept a 20 euro note.

Anderson alleged Sharif then punched him.

Braun said Sharif decided to plead no contest because it would cost too much to fly to Los Angeles and testify.

  1. I just hope the anger management course isn’t run by some lady in her sixties who is about to have her happy memories of the fur-capped heartthrob shattered.

  2. Actually Issandr, Omar Sherif never went to school with Edward Said. He went to another branch of Victoria College that Said wasn’t even in. This is according to Sherif, who expressed surprise at hearing Said’s mention of him in his autobiography.

Now this is Sherif’s word against Said’s as far as my knowledge is concerned. But what would this make of Said’s sacredness if Sherif’s version turned out to be true?

  3. Omar is in Masr these days, no? He can just bribe some buddy to fake an anger management course certificate, and have a good laugh about it.

  4. Beacon, since it isn’t the former choice you can call me an idiot until you address the first question. p.s. You’re only demonstrating my point; one can’t ask a simple question here?

  5. A few days ago, Almesryoon wrote that Omar Sharif fell into coma while he was traveling to Alexandria to work on a TV program for Channel 5. At the time of writing, he was in intensive care in one of Alexandria hospitals. As for the law suite filed against him in Beverly Hills, I wouldn’t take these accusations for granted. People are eager to go to court anytime they smell big money. No one ever take a poor person to court.

I have not read what Edward Said wrote (and where), but I know that Sharif (Michelle Shalhoub) was born in Alexandria and went to Victoria College there. Said went to Victoria College in Cairo.

  6. Dear Beacon of Light,

For emphasis I wikipediad Edward Said and found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Said“ rel=”nofollow”>timely quote:

“I was born in Jerusalem and had spent most of my formative years there and, after 1948, when my entire family became refugees, in Egypt. All my early education had, however, been in élite colonial schools, English public schools designed by the British to bring up a generation of Arabs with natural ties to Britain. The last one I went to before I left the Middle East to go to the United States was Victoria College in Cairo, a school in effect created to educate those ruling-class Arabs and Levantines who were going to take over after the British left. My contemporaries and classmates included King Hussein of Jordan, several Jordanian, Egyptian, Syrian and Saudi boys who were to become ministers, prime ministers and leading businessmen, as well as such glamorous figures as Michel Shalhoub, head prefect of the school and chief tormentor when I was a relatively junior boy, whom everyone has seen on screen as Omar Sharif.[3]”

Interesting, but this didn’t match with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Sharif“ rel=”nofollow”>Omar Sharif’s biography:

Sharif was born Michel Demitri Shalhoub on April 10, 1932 in Alexandria, Egypt to Joseph Shalhoub, a Lebanese immigrant and timber merchant, and his wife, Claire Shalhoub who was an Egyptian of Lebanese and Syrian descent. Omar Sharif graduated from Alexandria’s Victoria College, then from Cairo University with a mathematics and physics major. Afterwards, he worked with his father in the lumber business. Their business was less than successful following the investment of a large amount of capital in an endeavor to revitalize papyrus as a viable commodity.”

And apparently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Hussein_of_Jordan“ rel=”nofollow”>King Hussein went to the Alex branch as well:

Hussein completed his Junior High Education in Jordan, and then moved to Victoria College in Alexandria and Harrow School in England, and then to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to complete his education.

Now my idiocy felt that something didn’t really add up here. What is it, I wonder? *scratching my stupid head…*

My question wasn’t a dig at Said whom I admire (from the very little I know of him) as a person but at, well…thank you for stepping forward as a demonstration.

    Yours truly,

    The Idiot.

  7. Anyone remember that interview from maybe 7, 8 years ago where Sharif said he was open to new experiences, maybe homosexuality?
