Public Service Announcement

This won’t do much to protect those gutsy Egyptian bloggers standing out on a limb to expose torture in Egyptian detention centers, but given that Egypt has for the first time jailed a blogger for the contents of his blog, and given disturbing reports of harassment and intimidation of bloggers by security forces, less courageous bloggers should check out Ethan’s excellent guide to blogging anonymously with TOR and WordPress. RSF’s guide is also worth a look (Arabic here).

If you’re an anonymous blogger, remember: your pseudonym affords you no protection against anyone with even a little bit of determination and know-how.

  1. I think its great that a sub-human like that kareem thing has been snatched up and convicted of defaming Islam. I do indeed have one regret which is that the Sharee3a edict was not imposed. I really hope to see him dead. Better yet, I’d love to get the chance to meet him so I can do the honors of killing that piece of dirt. Lastly, I would like to see any blogger try and defame Islam because, as you correctly stated, using a pseudonym will not help much with a Muslim with dteremination and know-how. i.e Me.

  2. You mean that if we try real hard, we might be able to figure out who Baheyya is?

As for Ahmed El-Masry — you’re scarry brother. Relax…let your religious beliefs be personal and unto yourself. Live and let live, calm down, smell the flowers, enjoy a sunset.

  3. I am also Egyptian, but I loathe Islam and people like you. Kareem, like you and me, was born to Muslim parents. Since he has a brain, he was able to reject social and religious elements that didn’t suit him. He refused to just inherit a dogma that does not withstand simple reasoning. You, on the other hand, inherited a dogma and forbade thinking in the name of piety.

Let me give you an example of the hypocrisy about the “piety of Egyptian society” [el-Sha’b al-Mu’min]. Why does Egypt have one of the lowest ratios of returning tourists in the world? Let me tell you, I have been running into many women all over world who visited Egypt at some point and to sum up their experience in your pious society, they said “never again”. These religious judgemental individuals like yourself sexually harrassed them everywhere they went. Several women have told me that they actually cut their visit short losing lots of money because they couldn’t stand it anymore. So Kareem cannot express his views about Islam, but you, Ahmed, and people like you are allowed to sexually harrass women on the street in broad daylight. If the women complain they incur the wrath of well-connected harrassers. What a screwed-up society! People like you disgust me.

    Ahmed
