Links from my del.icio.us account for April 23rd:
- UK says it will review all arms exports to Israel – They probably won't do anything about it though: "British Foreign Secretary David Miliband told lawmakers that all current and future export licenses to Israel were being looked at "in light of recent events in Gaza." The government had been pressed by lawmakers to ensure that British-made weapons or weapon components weren't used by Israeli forces in their attack on Gaza, which lasted more than three weeks and left about 1,400 dead, according to one Palestinian count."
- Three thousand year-old arms storehouse uncovered in Sinai – Soon Rose al-Youssef will reveal it is being used to smuggle weapons to Gaza!
- Mubarak invites Israeli PM to Egypt (AFP via Yahoo! News) – OK now it's Bibi bidoun Avi.
- Why can’t we be like Ike? – AMS on looks at Eisenhower tough stance towards increasing US military spending and asks: "Here’s my question: If Ike could say ‘no,’ during the most dangerous era of the Cold War, with 160 Red Army Divisions on the gates of Europe, why can’t our leaders do the same thing today? Or are we to believe that a couple of thousand radical Islamists really equal the security threat of the Soviet Union?"
- LedgerGermane – links about politics, cover ups, mind control and really weird shit – Interesting link to a story on recent deal making Somalia sign away rights to exploiting continental shelf to profit Kenya and Norway – so who are the real pirates?
- Word games – Haaretz – Israel News – Same warnings about Netanyahu's upcoming "false concessions" to Obama on two-state and Arab initiative: "The only recognition that is needed now is Israel's recognition of the Palestinians as human beings. If this is obtained, all the rest will be relatively easy. The day will come when Israelis and Palestinians will not understand how they shed blood for so many years and why, but this day is further off than ever."
- Potential Traps for George Mitchell (Prospects for Peace) – Good column by Daniel Levy on Netanyahu's game of diversionary tactics and false expectations.
- ABC News Exclusive: Torture Tape Implicates UAE Royal Sheikh – ABC News – "A video tape smuggled out of the United Arab Emirates shows a member of the country's royal family mercilessly torturing a man with whips, electric cattle prods and wooden planks with protruding nails."
- Gaza; Peace n’ Freedom: Yad Vashem employee fired for mentioning Deir Yassin massacre – "The Israeli Yad Vashem (Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority) has fired one of its employees, after a teacher of a group of yeshiva students had complained to Yad Vashem that the employee had mentioned the 1948 Deir Yassin massacre during a tour of the institution."
- ‘Just World News’ with Helena Cobban: Give Me An I – Don Bacon provides a roundup of what to expect from next May's AIPAC conference.
- Report: Olmert, Livni may face war crimes charges in Norway – Haaretz – Israel News – As they should – let's get the Belgians, French, Spanish and others on this too. They deserve the same treatment as Pinochet.
Deir Yassin is actually visible from Yad Vashem – it's just on the other side of the valley. Not that you'd find signs to it.
