Nasrallah calls for avoiding civilian targets

Hassan Nasrallah has called for avoiding civilian targets on both sides:

BEIRUT: Hizbullah’s leader offered Thursday to stop pounding Israel’s “northern settlements” if the Jewish state refrained from bombarding Lebanon’s “cities and civilians.” Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah also issued a warning, however, in a televised speech: “Let my words be clear, any attack on Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, will result in Hizbullah bombarding the Zionist entity’s capital, Tel Aviv.”

In an almost immediate response aired on Israeli public television, a senior military official said Israel would destroy all of Lebanon’s infrastructure if Tel Aviv were hit.

“We are ready to keep the whole thing restricted to a military fight with the Israeli Army,” Nasrallah said, “on the ground, fighters to fighters.”

I’m not sure how to interpret this except as an attempt to make Israel look bad and reinforce its image of an army that targets civilians, since Hizbullah would be in fact probably unwilling to fight a direct “battlefield” war rather than a guerrilla one, which it has proved relatively effective at doing. Anyway, the rest of the article is interesting — and I’m surprised to see the Daily Star describe Hizbullah as “the resistance.”

  1. It was stated that ehud olmert took it as a sign of weakness, however he does realise that Hassan Nasrallah is man of his word. The complication is that if Nasrallah fires on tel aviv, olmert might would want to flatten the entire beirut. the israelis r ruthless and the UN and the international community have no power to do otherwise. Only a collective standing by the islamic countries can do something. Oil is the life source of this material world.

  2. How can Nasrallah call to avoid civilian casualties. other than the attack on the military outpost that began this conflict, hissbollah has consistently targeted civilians. I don’t see how anyone can take what he says seriously.

  3. What a laugh, this from Nasrallah .. it just forgoes both rule 3 and 4 of the ismanofacist manual of war, he must be doing this gracious gesture to endear himself to the 12th Imam.

    1. I shoot at you and kill you, I win

    2. I shoot at you as I hide behind my wives, children and parents, you kill them … I win.

    3. I shoot at you as I hide behind my wives, children and parents, you kill them … as martyrs, they win.

    4. I shoot at you as I hide behind my wives, children and parents, you kill me … as a martyr I win.

I’m sure that the Imam, whenever he crawls out of the septic tank that he has been hiding in for all these years and will be pleased.

  4. I don’t know where you got these rules from. But anyway, Hezbollah are not fighting from civiliian cities because they are hiding behind the women and children, but because they are defending these citites. If they leave, where do they go? Who defends the cities? Besides this is not an excuse for the coward Israeli planes flattening an entire city without differentiating between fighter and toddler. How about this for rule number 1 of Israeli fighting manual:

1 – I sit in my planes where you can’t touch me, I flatten you without even trying to distinguish between civillians and fighters, I win.

    eh?

  5. ‘Noserallah’ is ready to soil himself if he can’t get resupplied soon and the fact that Arab leaders are blowing him off and dissing his band of diminishing bandits can’t be improving his sense of self.

Oh yeah…great job of ‘defending’ the civilians by pulling up with a mobile rocket launcher and shooting your wad before buggering off and leaving the poor bastards to the tender mercy of the IAF.

Wipe the vermin out BEFORE Iran thinks to give them SAMs; or does that reek of too much common sense.

My option for successful reduction of missiles in Lebanon? Offer a bounty on every rocket that the civilians ‘liberate’ from the Hizbollah scum. The IDF needs to drop some more leaflets with instruction on how to call for a quick pickup, with bonus points if you can provide Hizbollah bodies…or is that too sensible, asking people to take a stand towards removing the REAL problem?

Hizbollah, the party of f*cktards! Exterminate them all if you want any peace in the ME this year.

  6. Ummm, I may have missed this day in class, but what’s a f*cktard? Is that like a special Islamic sect that Hizbollah represents? Or is that just some like puerile way of insulting a movement you disagree with that you are trying to pass off as informed analysis? Thanks John. Keep up the good work.
